The cell phones, the gadgets, the fact that they roll their eyes when I give a homework assignment. I get that homework sucks but I don't ever recall rolling my eyes at a teacher for anything but never mind a daily expectation! It's like I'm interfering with their lives when I ask them to do anything. I refuse to get my kids iphones or ipads and if they are the only ones at their school doing without then so be it! But I can tell you I am probably one of the only ones. Even the really, really poor kids have a smartphonePaulahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03933724042732934248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1948996795445562989.post-80712326057235957572013-05-22T21:53:51.699-04:002013-05-22T21:53:51.699-04:00The most you can do is manage yourself and raise c...The most you can do is manage yourself and raise children who learn these values. The culture is completely materialistic and egocentric as a whole with traces of responsible people smudge throughout. Sadly it may take something as drastic as an economic collapse or Great Depression to change culture as a whole. People start thinking different when most jobs are scarce or fuel and food is rationed. Back during older generations they had freedom gardens to support the war effort and to provide food for their families. They saved and saved for future rainy days and to put their kids in school. Don't get me wrong, I don't desire worse economic times but I won't rely on others to pay my way either. I'm hoping our generation outgrows their selfish stage sooner rather than later to make more of a difference in the world.Stephaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03512817941338797138noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1948996795445562989.post-5595506675612693832013-05-22T12:28:27.998-04:002013-05-22T12:28:27.998-04:00It's the same in England too. So many people ...It's the same in England too. So many people see government handouts and benefits as the way to make money; not actually going out and working for it. It makes me angry when I see people who don't work being able to buy things that I can't afford even though I do work. And as they get more benefits, they'll never go to work!Rebeccah Giltrowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12233619259915854967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1948996795445562989.post-69141942474100280022013-05-22T11:33:55.614-04:002013-05-22T11:33:55.614-04:00One of the best rants of the day. Even in South Africa where so many neighbours are going hungry and are homeless the kids are more concerned about a phone than shoes. I don't like it, and I don't like seeing these kids inside when they should be playing. However - and I guess this argument really centers on what age group you are talking about because Generation Y is so broad - I have to disagree about the laziness of the generation. I believe that our generation is learning the value of hard work because of what the recession did. We can't rely on loans anymore, we have to work hard to make ends meet. But again, it really depends on what age group we're talking about. I will say, I think it is more evident in the area that we live in, where everything is centered around your status, and what "stuff" you have. I don't think it's AS bad everywhere else in the country as it is here. But I do agree, some ish needs to change!Jennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11330910749491673996noreply@blogger.com
