Then and Now...

WOW, October is actually here. The month of TRUE fall, halloween and of course, Vegas for kickball. I honestly can't beleve it's that time of year already. Wow, just wow.

I've particpated in various blog every day in blank month, and while it's been fun, it's a lot of work. But, I thought, why not participate every now and then just for gigs [that means giggles ;)]. Today I'm linking up with Taylor and Helene for #Blogtember14.

The prompt: Dream job when you were little/ what is it now?

Then...I wanted to be President. The end. First woman President of the good ol US of A. In every school time line, where we had to write papers, essays or paragraphs on 'What I want to Be When I Grow Up' I wrote President. My parents, who always told me I could be anything, believed me, but I think everyone else though, 'whatever, kid'. It wasn't until high school, when I learned how different my government views were from my peers and how much I didn't completely understand politics that I lost the dream.

Changing the world and making it a better place was what I wanted to do. I had no interested in the back handed, sneaky, back door deals that came along with politics, and frankly, I didn't have the stomach for it all back then. Now, I'm a lil wiser, snarkier and a better quick thinker on my feet, but back then I would have been eaten alive.

After that dream died, I decided I wanted to go into sports broadcasting, but didn't fully understand the work that meant. My college wasn't known for their journalism program [although it's grown a lot since I've been there] so I didn't get the internship opportunities I needed while in school. I've done some broadcasting for a public access channel that reported high school sports, but sadly my job conflicted so I lost that dream too. It's still a sore spot, I stink.

Now... I just want to be a stay at home mom. I don't have kids, yet, but I grew up with a SAHM and so I've always wanted to be one. Honestly, when I was little I thought everyone's mom was a SAHM, that drove carpools, made dinners and was on the PTA. Yes, I realize how nauseating and ridiculous that sounds, but I also didn't know any friends that had divorced parents until I was in high school. Obviously, I was a lil sheltered.

Before I go any further, let me say that I think working moms rock. I know many friends that choose to be working moms and others that are unable to be SAHMs so they have to work and I think they are all rockstars. 100%!!! [So please, don't think I'm talking down or badly about working moms. This is just me, talking about what I want to be, in my life.]

Since playing house in elementary school, I've always had a dream to be a mom. I really want to be home with my kid[s] to play with them, teach them, cook for them, drive them places and just be there for them whether they want me there or not.

My mom was able to attend all of my school functions. She was team mom on all of my sports teams, in HS and in college. She drove down to my University during the week to watch me play soccer, because she could, which I loved. Sure there were times in high school where I was mad she didn't have a job, because I wanted be like everyone else and watch MTV after school [no tv on week nights....seriously]. But, it was amazing having her home, always there when we needed her and I want to be that to my children.

Right now, it seems like it will be a possibly and that makes me hopeful. However, I know that life is unexpected and there might need to be some compromises for me to have that dream. I'm thankful that Le Husband is 100% on board and willing to be the bread winner, that's huge, huge, huge. We've talked about the future and sometimes I'll mention the ginormous house, for fun and he'll just look at me and say "Guess you won't be a SAHM then". Touche, honey, touche!

I'm not quite ready to be a mom, or pregnamnt for that matter, but I'm excited about the future. I hope that the plans I have, line up with God's [haha, did you just hear Him laugh? yeah me too], and I'm really hopeful that I'll get to be mom to a sweet lil family, sometimes soon in the future.

  1. First of all, I love that you wanted to be the president!! That is such a great dream to have as a little girl!!! I was always sad that I couldn't be president because I wasn't born in the US - LOL!! I think SAHM have just as hard of a job, if not harder at times as working moms!! You are going to be the best mom!!

  3. ha, how cool were you?!? First female president?! I was much more unoriginal than that. haha!! I went with the usual "teacher" route for a little while. Then it changed multiple times from there. I'm so indecisive!

  4. i wanted to be a doctor! then discovered how much it costs for med school, you have to be in school until you're like 100 and then you come out of school with a HUGE debt looming over your head....so i went into I.T. instead LOL

also, totally possible to be a working mom and be at all of your kids' functions/events....i think the key is the type of job you have that provides the flexibility to allow you to do that. my husband and i work in a very large corporation but the team/director is also family oriented so if we need to leave part way through the day or if kayla is sick and we have to stay home, we can leave or work from home when we need to. who i applaud are the single parents - because that shizz is HARD. with a spouse, you can at least split everything but when you're doing it all on your own, man...i can't even imagine.

  6. I wanted to be a doctor! I'm still not quite sure what happened to that dream... I just ended up going down the business route and I don't even have a real reason why, ha! But (I never would have thought I would say this in a million years if you asked me growing up), I think I want to be a SAHM, too. No baby plans right now but being able to be home this last month and really put all my focus/energy into my home and my little family has been AMAZING!

  7. Funny how dreams quickly change, the older we get and the more knowledge we acquire, huh? SAHM's are the best! I didn't have one, and subsequently my mom had to miss a lot of my extracurricular activities due to her job. I would've loved to have her home with me every day. No shame in that at all :)

  8. I love this! I think I wanted to be a doctor of some sort when I was little... Now, I can't even stand the sight of needles and blood so, that dream went buh bye!

I would love to be a SAHM. It is something that my husband and I have gone back and forth about. I enjoy contributing to our hosehold income, so it is a tough decission for me. At this point, it looks like I may keep at least part time hours with my job. Best of both worlds!

  9. I wanted to be a princess... like I really thought i could choose to be one. Sigh.
To be honest, the only thing I have ever wanted to be, and know I'd be good at, is a mum. My husband and I both agree I'll stay at home, we'll just live within our means. It can be done.

  10. This is the SWEETEST post!! Loved reading about your dreams when you were younger, but I love that you want to be a stay at home mom! It's a bit of an adjustment to not be working full time, but you quickly realize you are just as busy, if not busier staying at home! I am in awe of working mom's who do it all (and quite jealous that most of them hire cleaners, HA! That is my goal, at least for the bathrooms. I HATE cleaning the bathrooms!)You are gonna be an AMAZING mom when the time comes!
P.S. We are going to Vegas this month as well! When will you be there?

  11. That is AWESOME that you had always wanted to be president when you were a kid. :) I went through quite a bit of dream jobs as a kid..the typical..teacher, nurse, veterinarian..ect. But, deep down being a MOM was all I ever wanted. :)

  12. Oh the plans I think I have...and then there are those that are God's, lol. I imagine someday being a mom and possibly staying home with children because I too grew up that way. I never wanted to be president though, so that's totally awesome!!

  13. I have total respect for stay at home moms. I feel like I'm close to one as I'm working on my Master's and this semester I'm at school 3 days per week so I'm with my 3 month old baby the other 4 days per week. I have total respect for stay at home moms. My mom always worked and my husband is hoping after I get my Master's that I can possibly work from home... we'll see. And I think as kids a lot of us dreamed about being president. Don't worry I'd have been eaten by the wolf pack too!

  15. My cousin also said she wanted to be the first female president. In her 5th grade year book, parents were able to put dedications in for all the students "graduating" elementary school. Her parents wrote something and called her "Madam President". haha.

  17. Love love love! :) If you were president, would you make the oval office pink??? HAHA

As for SAHM - that's my dream job too!!!!!!!!! You're going to kick butt at the mommy thing! I just know it!

  18. I love that you wanted to be the first lady president, such a great dream for a little girl to have. I think SAHM's rock! I'd love to be able to stay home with my babies when that time comes!

  19. I love that your dream job is to be a stay at home mom. I have been lucky enough to stay home with my son so far, and it is really wonderful to be able to watch him grow up and go to his field trips. I do plan on going to work after I get my degree though, but I am hoping that it will be a job that I can take off a day here and there to go on the field trips with him :)

  20. My husband keeps telling me every time we have the job talk that if my little heart desires to be a SAHM then he would make my dream come true. Gotta love them :)

  21. I wanted to be a whale trainer at Sea World as a child. I fell in love with orca whales because of that place and think they are the most amazing animal. I still love them, but my love for Sea World has seriously gone away after reading so many bad things and watching Blackfish, which absolutely broke my heart for my favorite animal. Needless to say we will never go there as a family.

I became a teacher, which i absolutely loved. Teaching children is so much fun and also hard, hard work!

Now I'm a SAHM. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. I've had to get used to the idea of the new Jess that I am. I'm a different person (in a good way, but still different) than I was before and that's a lot to get used to. I wouldn't trade it for the world, but there are days I'd trade an hour of quiet and doing what I want for my right arm. :) I hope you get the pleasure of being a SAHM like you want. It's the best job in the world.

  22. I definitely dressed up as "president" for career day in elementary school. I just remembered that after reading your post. And I just love the second half of your post. I think it's great that your mom was home when you got home from HS....that's what I'm hoping to do for my boys.

  23. Crazy, but I wanted to be an OBGYN until I was like 16, and realized it meant blood and i don't do blood. Then the lawyer thing hit. I really would like to work for the DA's office, but alas here I am in Big Law. I think I would actually like to be a sahm, but not sure its feasible right now.
