Take a Look, it's in a Book

Today I'm coming at you with a few book reviews.

With all the recent trips I've taken,
I've needed some new books to pass the time.

First Counsel: Brad Meltzer
512314
"Michael Garrick is a young man with a dream job. As a lawyer in the White House, he rubs shoulders with the top men and women in the country. And that includes Shadow, the Secret Service code name for the First Daughter, Nora Hartson, who likes Michael a lot. It's difficult dating the First Daughter; Michael and Nora are never alone, and Nora has a rebellious streak about the constant surveillance she is under, so it is no surprise when she encourages Michael to lose the tail when they are out one evening. But when they see Edgar Simon, the President's chief adviser and Michael's boss, in a gay bar, they decide to follow him. What they see will put Michael's career--and his life--in danger.

Back at the White House, Michael talks to one of his colleagues about the legal and ethical issues of the Edgar Simon situation. She says she will get back to him, but before she does she is murdered, and Michael is on the list of suspects. Nora could corroborate his alibi, but suddenly it's impossible to get hold of her. She doesn't answer his calls and, when Michael finally does speak to her, she doesn't want to be involved, leaving him baffled and vulnerable. This is a roller coaster of a thriller, one with a unique view of the day to day dealings in the most powerful house in the world".

Sometimes I'm just looking for a book to hold my attention. It doesn't have to be a best seller or one that everyone else is reading, it just has to keep me interested for a set bit of time. Usually, these books are found right before a big road trip or vacation. Brad Meltzer has become one of my go to authors for a great book, and I really enjoyed this one. It kept me constantly guessing. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out, BOOM another twist reared it's head.

I promise this book will keep your attention, while making you think twice about making assumptions. Meltzer can't write a bad book, in my opinion, but this book, is hands down my favorite.

Doc: Mary Doria Russell
8911226
"The year is 1878, peak of the Texas cattle trade. The place is Dodge City, Kansas, a saloon-filled cow town jammed with liquored-up adolescent cowboys and young Irish hookers. Violence is random and routine, but when the burned body of a mixed-blood boy named Johnnie Sanders is discovered, his death shocks a part-time policeman named Wyatt Earp. And it is a matter of strangely personal importance to Doc Holliday, the frail twenty-six-year-old dentist who has just opened an office at No. 24, Dodge House.

Beautifully educated, born to the life of a Southern gentleman, Dr. John Henry Holliday is given an awful choice at the age of twenty-two: die within months in Atlanta or leave everyone and everything he loves in the hope that the dry air and sunshine of the West will restore him to health. Young, scared, lonely, and sick, he arrives on the rawest edge of the Texas frontier just as an economic crash wrecks the dreams of a nation. Soon, with few alternatives open to him, Doc Holliday is gambling professionally; he is also living with Mária Katarina Harony, a high-strung Hungarian whore with dazzling turquoise eyes, who can quote Latin classics right back at him. Kate makes it her business to find Doc the high-stakes poker games that will support them both in high style. It is Kate who insists that the couple travel to Dodge City, because “that’s where the money is.”

And that is where the unlikely friendship of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp really begins—before Wyatt Earp is the prototype of the square-jawed, fearless lawman; before Doc Holliday is the quintessential frontier gambler; before the gunfight at the O.K. Corral links their names forever in American frontier mythology—when neither man wanted fame or deserved notoriety".

Have you ever picked out a book, without a real thought and gone "Hmmm, this sounds interesting? I hope it's good?" That's exactly what I did with this book and I was pleasntly surprised by how well it kept my attention.

To be completely honest,  I didn't know Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were real people. I thought they were just characters in that famous movie ;)! This book provided a very interesting peak into the "Old West" and really made you pull for the main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about Doc and think many people would as well.

Accidentally Yours: Susan Mallery

"WANTED: -Single mom seeks billionaire's pocketbook to fund dying son's research cure. Will seduce if necessary. Blackmail is not out of the question. Miracles welcome. -Cynical billionaire seeks working mom with a heart of gold for

PR campaign to improve his standing in the community. Must be willing to attend social events. Anyone looking for love need not apply.

It seemed like the perfect match... until the unthinkable happened".

I grabbed this book randomly, because it looked light-hearted and fun. Basically, an easy, girlie, enjoyable read. I totally judged this book by it's cover and it was the correct assessment. The main character, the single mom, is strong, bright, quick witted and someone I could be friends with in real life.

As you can imagine, the plot line is the standard girl meets totally 'wrong guy', they have to work together, they start falling for each other, something happens and then...okay I won't spoil it for you ;)! Mallery did a great job keeping my attention and I flew through the book in just a few days. If you're looking for a fun, fluffy book, definitely check this one out.

Have you read any good books lately?!!?
